Wednesday:10th Week of the year – C

I Reading: 2Corinthians 3:4-11: God is the one who has given us the qualification to be the administrators of the new covenant, which is not a covenant of written letters but of the Spirit.

Gospel: Mathew 5:17-19: I have come not to abolish the Law or the Prophets but to complete them.

The Law and Jesus: Breaking the Law of God, Mt 5:17-19

Jesus was accused of destroying or abolishing the law of God. He was always accused of minimizing God’s law. The thrust of Jesus is love and forgiveness and true spirit of law and justice. Jesus did not promote the letter of the laws but the true spirit of the laws with love and forgiveness. This is what Jesus said in today’s gospel and taught us.

1. A person must know that Jesus came to fulfil the law (v.17-18)

a. The law is not to be abolished

b. The law is perpetual-more sure than heaven and earth

2. A person must do and teach the law in order to be great in the kingdom of heaven (v.19)

a. If a person disobeys and influences others he is ranked least

b. If a person obeys and influences others he is ranked great

3. A person must have more righteousness than a religionist to enter the kingdom of heaven (v.20)

Thought: The law of God is often broken because some people have never heard about God’s law and some do not have the law impressed upon their minds enough to worry about keeping it as a result sin, death, violence, war, murders, killings, degradation of human moral lives etc. are there in the world.
