Aim/Goal: “Proclaiming the Word with Faith, Reverence, and Skill”


Duration: 1 day (4–6 hours) or 2 sessions


Participants: Parish lectors/readers, new and experienced


Objective: To equip readers to proclaim the Word of God effectively, reverently, and confidently during the liturgy.


Workshop Outline


Session 1: Theology of the Ministry of Reader (45 min)


Objectives


Understand the ministry of lector as a sacred ministry.


Appreciate the importance of Scripture in the liturgy.


Topics


The Word of God in the Catholic Church


The role of the lector during Mass


Spiritual preparation for proclaiming Scripture


Qualities of a good reader:


Faith


Reverence


Preparation


Clarity


Humility


Biblical Foundations


Book of Nehemiah 8:8 – “They read from the book… clearly.”


Letter to the Romans 10:17 – “Faith comes from hearing.”


First Letter to Timothy 4:13 – “Devote yourself to public reading of Scripture.”


Session 2: Liturgical Norms for Readers (45 min)


Duties Before Mass


Study the readings beforehand.


Pray with the text.


Arrive early.


Check pronunciation.


During Mass


Process with dignity if carrying the Book of the Gospels.


Approach the ambo reverently.


Announce the reading clearly:


“A reading from…”


“The Word of the Lord.”


Important Liturgical Guidelines


The lector proclaims the readings except the Gospel.


The ambo is reserved for Scripture, the Psalm, and intercessions.


Dress appropriately and modestly.
