THURSDAY- 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME –B

Gospel: Matthew 13:47-53: The collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use.

I Reading: Jeremiah 18:1-6: As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine.

The Parable of the Dragnet: Separating the Bad from the Good, 13:47-50

The net is the kingdom of heaven and the gospel is the message of the kingdom. The sea is the world in all the depth of its darkness and its unknown. The fishermen represent Jesus Christ and his followers. Jesus does not explain the first part because the meaning is clear.

1. Parable describes the Kingdom of Heaven (v.47)

2. The net is cast into the sea (v.47-48)

a. It gathers every kind

b. It is drawn when full

c. The good are gathered into containers

d. The bad are cast away

3. The parable is a symbol of the world’s end (v.49-50)

a. Angel comes forth

b. Purpose: separate the wicked from the righteous

1) to cast into fire

2) result: weeping gnashing

Thought: There is a specific destination for the wicked and it is a place of eternal punishment. Jesus Christ preached and taught eternal punishment time and again.
