THURSDAY- 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME –A

3rd July, Feast of Saint Thomas, Apostle, Patron Saint of India

Gospel: John 20:24-29: The Great Conviction-Thomas’ Confession.

I Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-9: The Word of the Lord was addressed to me..

II Reading Eph 2:19-22: You are no longer aliens or foreign visitors..

The Great Conviction-Thomas’ Confession, 20:24-29

Thomas’ faith in Jesus Christ grew day after day; so should ours, till Christ becomes our Lord and our God forever in heaven. Faith in Christ is God’s gift; only God can give it and we must be grateful for having received it. John mentions Thomas on four occasions:

1. Thomas said to his companions during inner sufferings and conspiracy to kill Jesus when Jesus decided to go back to Jerusalem, “Let us go too and die with him.” (Jn 11:16)

2. Thomas interrupted Jesus saying: “Lord, we do not know where you are going: show how can we know the way?” (Jn 14:5)

Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” (Jn 14:6)

3. Today’s Gospel.

4. Jesus appeared to the seven disciples and later on Jesus appeared to Thomas when all were there (Jn 20: 27; Jn 21:1-23).

i. Faith in Jesus Christ implies a total surrender to his plans of love for us.

ii. Faith in Jesus Christ brings to us incalculable treasures.

iii. Our Faith in Christ must grow day after day.

This is an excellent study of the conviction and confession of Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus.

1.    Thomas’ frustrated, reactionary spirit (v.24-25)

a.    The disciples testified: Thomas argued

b.    The reason: Guilt-he had forsaken and withdrawn from them

2.    Thomas’ false picture of Jesus (v.25)

a.    He was just an earthly deliverer

b.    He was now dead

c.     Result: persistent doubt for eight days

3.    Thomas’ critical confrontation and confession: Jesus appeared and challenged and convicted him (v.26-28)

a.    The confrontation

1)    Jesus was aware of Thomas’ demands

2)    Jesus warned and called for belief

3)    The strong confession

4.    Thomas’ great lesson for all people.

Thought: To doubt is to be Christless.  “Separate from Christ...without hope and without God in the world” (Eph 2:12). False pictures of Jesus lead to unbelief. Jesus is more than a great teacher, a great prophet, a great man and a great founder of religion.

29th JUNE, FEAST OF THE APOSTLES PETER AND PAUL, SOLEMNITY

I Reading: Acts 12:1-11

II Reading: 2 Tim 4:6-8.17-18

Gospel: Mt 16:13-19

We celebrate today the feast of the apostles Peter and Paul. Let us thank God for these two apostles for the light and strength they needed to announce the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout their lifetime, and witnessed to Christ at their death through the shedding of their blood. Both were executed in Rome around the year 67 A.D., that is, some 35 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

These two saints are known as the “Pillars of the Church.” The Church of Christ is built by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus Christ), by the blood of the martyrs and believers. “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.”

Andrew brought his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus fixed his eyes on him and said “You are Simon, son of John; you are to be called Cephas, which means a rock (Jn 1:42).” In today’s Gospel Jesus confirmed and strengthened the faith of Peter and gave him the power and authority to carry out the mission of Christ and nothing should destroy or diminish the mission of Christ while proclaiming the Good News of Christ.

Simon Peter was an ordinary person and illiterate (Jewish mission) whereas Paul was a highly educated person (Gentile mission). Both invested their whole energy in Christ and loved him so much and followed him immediately till the end of their lives even unto death. Even persecution and opposition did not stop them from spreading the Gospel of Christ. Although they had lots of differences and contracting characters, still they worked together (Unity) and preached the Good News to the people (diversity) and continued the mission of Christ with a missionary zeal (universal mission for the salvation of souls).

Let us ask for God’s grace to strengthen our faith in Christ and imbibe the spirit of these two saints to continue the mission of Jesus Christ despite persecution, rejection, opposition and temptation in our vocational journey of Christ.

Immaculate Heart of Mary- Feast

I Reading: Isaiah 61: 9-11

II Reading: Galatians 4:4-

Gospel: Luke 2:41-51

"His mother treasured all these things in her heart." [Lk. 2:51] My brothers and sisters in Christ, welcome to today's celebration of the Holy Mass that commemorate the Marian Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary."

On this special Feast, we are reminded of the flawless nature of Mary, the Mother of God. As the New Eve, Mary was created flawless, remained flawless throughout her life and was elevated to Heaven in her flawless state at the end of her earthly life. Consequently, the Holy Catholic Church proclaimed the dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of Mary in support of these truths.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary is the precious Pearl of God the Father, the greatest of all His creations, far surpassing the greatness that is found in all of the angels and the saints. As the Catechism of the Holy Catholic Church teaches us and as some of the Vicars of Rome have proclaimed over the years, the Blessed Virgin Mary is the new Eve. (C.C.C. # 411, 511, 726, 975, 2618, 2853)

Full of grace by the power of the Holy Spirit, preserved from sin as teaches the dogma of the Immaculate Conception and preserved from the corruption of death according to the dogma of the Assumption, (C.C.C. # 2853) the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary culminates all what has been progressively revealed to the Holy Catholic Church regarding her beauty, her honours and her glories. To no other creations has the Lord God given so great honours and glories as He has bestowed upon Immaculate the Heart of Mary.

On the subject of the Heart of the Incarnate Word, the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, "Jesus knew and loved us each and all during his life, his agony and his Passion, and gave himself up for each one of us: 'The Son of God... loved me and gave himself for me.' He has loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by our sins and for our salvation, 'is quite rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that... love with which the divine Redeemer continually loves the eternal Father and all human beings" without exception." (C.C.C. # 478)

In defining the meaning of the word "heart," the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The spiritual tradition of the Church also emphasizes the heart, in the biblical sense of the depths of one's being, where the person decides for or against God." (C.C.C. # 368)

In consideration of the aforementioned, while the heart of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a symbol of human love that comes from the depth of her whole being, a love which cannot be classified as Divine love, it is the highest of the most pure love that can be found within a human being. Immaculate in nature, it is a self- giving love that humbly seeks to obey and serve in accordance with the righteousness of God.

Through her immeasurable self-giving love, the Immaculate Heart of Mary has never ceased to intercede for the children of God, seeking to direct every soul towards her beloved Son Jesus. What she could not do on earth as a mother of mankind who's love surpasses time and space, by the grace of the Heavenly Father, she has been granted the joy of doing it from Heaven.

Appearing to many blessed ones over the centuries, her motherly message of love has been to renounce Satan, to pray continuously, to do penance, and to go to Church. In return, she promised to intercede before her beloved Son Jesus on behalf of mankind for the grace of God to shine upon the world.

Next to Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the Heavenly Father's greatest fountain of grace. From her heart flows countless physical and spiritual blessings and healings. Indeed there is truth to the word, "To Jesus, through Mary." To touch the heart of Jesus, you must first touch the heart of Mary. If the eyes of your heavenly mother favours you, how could the eyes of her Son not favour you? Surely, recognizing the Spirit filled wisdom of His Mother, the Lord will welcome you as a member of His family.

Today, let us be thankful to God for the priceless gift of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to the world, to the Catholic Church and to each and everyone of us. To many, the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the only comfort in these needy days of the Church and in times of personal needs.

The readings...
[The readings were taken from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible (C) 1989 Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Church of Christ in the United States of America.]

First Reading...

"The descendants of the just shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations." [Is. 61:9-11]

Gospel Reading...

"Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when Jesus was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival.

When the festival was ended and the parents started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travellers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him.

After three days they found Jesus in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, 'Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.'

Jesus said to them, 'Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?' But they did not understand what he said to them.

Then Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to Joseph and Mary. His mother treasured all these things in her heart." [Lk. 2:41-51]

 Sacred Heart of Jesus- Feast

I Reading: Deuteronomy 7:6-11

II Reading: 1 John 4:7-16

Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30

Before the beginning of time, before creation, God existed all alone. The love of God was the only love there was then. The love of God is the only love there is now. And the love of God is the only love there will ever be. We are not creators we are only receivers and transmitters of the love of God. And we can transmit only as much as we receive. To tell us of His love, God sent his only Son. “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus is the greatest expression of the love of God for us and the greatest expression of the human response to that love.

Jesus was divine, the Son of God. He was also human, the son of Mary. He spoke with divine authority but he spoke in human language. He spoke in the simple language of ordinary people of his day about the things they were most familiar with: the birds of the air, the lilies of the field, the sower and the seed, the vine and the branches. When he wanted to tell his apostles how important they were he said that they were the “light of the world” and the “salt of the earth.” And when he wanted to tell us of God’s love for us he used the heart, the human symbol of love. He told us that we should learn of him that he was meek and humble of heart and we would find rest for our souls.

The contemporaries of Jesus knew this meek and humble heart of Jesus and they knew that it beat with unconditional love for them. Rough, simple fishermen leave their boats and nets to follow him. Learned doctors sit at his feet to hear his wisdom. A tax collector leaves his money table to become his disciple. Multitudes follow him for days, so captivated that they forget to provide food to eat. The sick fight their way through the crowds just to touch the hem of his garment. And they all found peace and rest for their souls.

Never before has the unconditional love of the Sacred Heart been as relevant as it is today. We live in the information-centered society of the World Wide Web and the Internet. There is a lust for knowledge. This “info mania” has produced an unbelievable amount of information and data all of which can be stored on a small silicon chip and called forth at will. We can no longer see the forest for the trees. The sheer volume of all of this information has made this the age of the digest, the logo and the symbol.

Theologians are saying that amid the chaos it is necessary to capture the transcendent in a symbol that is relevant for you; in other words to capture the unconditional love of God in a symbol that is relevant for me. Jesus has already done this for us in his Sacred Heart. “Learn of me that I am meek and humble of heart and you will find rest for your soul.”

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the symbol of the fidelity of the love of God. It reminds us that God loves us unconditionally with a love we cannot earn or ever be worthy of. And he loves us for ourselves, not as we should be, or possibly could be, but as we are with all of the physical warts, psychological quirks and spiritual infidelities.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is most relevant today because not only is this the information-centered society, but it is also an age of anxiety, fear, insecurity and despair. Every year more than a million and a half Americans suffer heart attacks. Heart failure is the leading cause of death in America today. Heart failure is also the most avoidable cause of death because long before the patient is rushed to the emergency room trouble has been going on in the heart: in the fearful heart, the anxious heart, the discouraged heart, the lonely heart, the rejected heart, the angry heart and the sinful heart. The root cause of all of this heart trouble is the failure to know and trust the meek and humble Sacred Heart of Jesus.

“Jesus, meek and humble of heart make our hearts like unto Thine.”

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

(CORPUS CHRISTI)-CYCLE-A

SOLEMNITY

I Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3.14-16: He fed you with manna which neither you nor your fathers had known.

II Reading: 1 Cor 10:16-17: That there is one loaf that, though there are many of us, we form a single body.

Gospel: John 6:51-58: My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Eucharist as a unique means for our salvation. Jesus communicated his life to us more intensely and we realize the life-giving Bread for our spiritual life, both as individuals and as a Christian community.

In the first reading, Moses reminds the people of God’s provision of food in the form of manna; in the wilderness. God is life and He cares for His people giving all needful things and He shares His divine life.

Paul urges the Corinthians to avoid the use of foods offered to pagan idols and he states that the Eucharist bonds believers into a single body, for they have made their communion with Christ in his Body and Blood.

Jesus Christ came into the world to give back to humanity the divine life man lost by sin. Today we depend on Jesus Christ for the maintenance of divine-life and Jesus prepared the unique food of the Eucharist. The Christian community needs the Eucharist in order to live in grace, love and communion as one Body/Church of Christ. The “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving” to praise Christ for his Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and for our spiritual nourishment to have eternal life.

A person must receive and partake of the Bread of Life. When he/she does, he/she receives five wonderful things.

1. The religionists were perplexed over Jesus’ words (v.52-53)

          a. They questioned partaking of His flesh

          b. Jesus proclaimed a much more shocking thing: unless one partakes of Him, he does not have life

2. Result 1: Eternal life-conquering death and being resurrected (v.54)

3. Result 2: True, not false satisfaction (v.55)

4. Result 3: Supernatural companionship and fellowship (v.56)

5. Result 4: A life that is full of purpose and meaning (v.57)

6. Result 5: Incorruptible food received within the heart-energizing life forever (v.58)

Thought: Unless a person receives (eats and drinks) Christ, he/she has no life within him/her. He/she is a dead person. (Eph 2:1; 5:14; Col 2:13; 1Tim 5:6; Rev 3:1)
